National Fire Prevention Week – What To Do After A Fire

NYC Office Fire

Your New York office could be engulfed in flames within a few minutes once a fire strikes.

While you can follow fire prevention tips, sometimes things happen that are out of your control.

In the spirit of National Fire Prevention Week, Target Security would like to offer some tips on what to do after a fire.

What To Do After A Fire

Wait Until Its Safe To Enter

Don’t enter a fire-damaged building unless the authorities say that it is safe to do so.

A fire can always start again even if it appears to be out. Once you are allowed to enter the building, be sure to look for any signs of smoke or fire.

Watch Out For Structural Damage

Strucural Fire Damage in New YorkBeware of structural damage that was caused by the fire. A proper inspection of the structure should occur to determine the extent of fire damage.

Roofs and floors may be weakened and subject to collapse. Structural damage from fires needs immediate repairs before it is deemed safe to enter.

Contact Your Insurance Company

After a fire, call your insurance company or agent. Ask what to do about the immediate needs of your building which includes pumping out water and covering openings.

Be sure to keep records of all cleanup and repair costs. Try to make a list of everything that was lost or damaged by the fire.
